The flashing broadside tearing holes in the hull
The distance closes, hoards of boarders in the fray

One eye to the past, the other to the page
Fleets and ships, nations and men, the rise and fall
The essence of the piece, you captured them all

A cutting-out, undertaken in the dark
Synchronised diversions taking place in the bay
Five boats, full of men, silent and stark
An explosion of violence, and she’s borne away

Twenty-one times we read the first page
But only twenty did we read the last
Your world is tangible: love, fear and rage
And now you’re gone, outlived by the past

A Spanish squadron with specie and gold
Four frigates, line astern, riding the trades
A nation’s wealth stowed down in the hold
Four British ships ride out to engage
